WHY POSITIVE LIVING ?

Experts agree that HIV/AIDS is more than a health issue: it is a lifestyle issue. Just as publishing health warnings on a cigarette packet does not stop people from smoking, so merely providing people with information on HIV/AIDS does not succeed in changing sexual behaviour.

The approach to HIV/AIDS education should go beyond the transfer of knowledge and information regarding HIV/AIDS and the prevention thereof. It should address attitudes and perceptions regarding life, sexual behaviour and life choices so as to not only address the symptoms, but also the causes of the problem.

Positive Living aims to help people who are not yet infected to:
Understand the risk of HIV/AIDS in relation to their own lives (instead of believing that “it will never happen to me”)
Make positive choices to ensure that they remain HIV negative.

The program also addresses the needs of people who are HIV+ by helping them to deal with the disease in a positive way.

WHAT YOU WILL GET:

Credibility: Free To Grow, home of the award winning Free To Grow Lifeskills program, designed & wrote Positive Living. You can therefore be assured that the program content has been carefully researched to be relevant to the challenges that learners are facing. The methods used for helping them integrate the information and exploring their values, feelings and attitudes are, in the true Free To Grow style, fresh, stimulating and highly participative.

Simplicity: None of the theoretical content of the programme is new; it is rather a consolidation of the best information, from many different sources, into a simple and accessible format with lasting impact.

Practical application: The focus of the program is on changing attitudes and on practical application instead of on the transfer of masses of technical information on HIV/AIDS. It is therefore easy for learners to relate to the course and apply what they have learned.

Flexibility: The program content and methodology can be adapted to the needs of different target groups. It can also be presented in the vernacular if required.

Positive learning environment: The program is presented in a safe, non-threatening small group environment by passionate and skilled facilitators. This contributes to creating a high level of openness in the group that encourages the participants to discuss sensitive issues freely.

Integration: Although Positive Living can be presented as a stand-alone course, it has been designed as a natural follow up to Free To Grow Lifeskills, building on the same foundation and integrating concepts that the learners have already addressed and mastered. Learning is therefore reinforced and training time maximised.

IMPACT ON
ORGANISATIONS
IMPACT ON INDIVIDUALS

“We value the fact that Positive Living is highly interactive and uses a fresh approach to HIV/AIDS education.

Free To Grow does not have a ‘take it or leave it’ approach. Their flexibility and support were crucial to what otherwise could have become a logistical nightmare. The fact that they were willing to change their approach to meet our needs resulted in a logistically feasible and very meaningful intervention.”

Ilsa Botes, Group Employee Development Manager, Barloworld Motor.

"We decided to go the route of HIV/AIDS training with Free To Grow, mainly because of their experience in this field and the fact that they're one of the few consultancies that offer effective training for workers with our type of profile. Free To grow knows our industry and the facilitators relate very well to our people. It is also important to us that the training is presented in Afrikaans and that it is practical, not theoretical or academic.

We are very satisfied with the training, it has made a valuable contribution."

Pieter Swanepoel, Executive Director, KROMCO

"I was very impresed with both the quality of the programme and the facilitators. The interesting games and exercises got everybody involved and the session was pitched perfectly for our people."

Karen Ralph, HR Manager, MUA Insurance Company

"Positive Living has definitely had the effect on our staff we hoped for. Many of our employees have now requested us to arrange testing for them."

Suraya Samuels, Training Officer STOPAK

“The inclusion of practical exercises effectively serves to illustrate the seriousness and extreme virulence of this disease. The course’s content is easily understood by various levels of employees and assists them to deal with the horror of the disease in a positive manner. This course assisted many Pres Les employees with their fears and prejudices surrounding the incidence of this disease.”

Roy Kemmis-Betty, Company Secretary Pres Les

“I saw a number of providers and chose Free To Grow because I was looking for something with interaction and experiential learning so that people can remember what they have learned. It is also important to us that Positive Living is aligned to draft unit standards and thus linked to the NQF.
